Arul Kanda barred from leaving Malaysia, says report

KUALA LUMPUR: 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) chief executive officer, Arul Kanda Kandasamy, and former 1MDB CEO Datuk Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi have reportedly been barred from leaving the country.

Astro Awani, in a report, said its online checks on the status of the individuals via the Immigration Control Checking System (SSPI) turned up the message, "Sila rujuk ke pejabat imigresen terdekat" (Please refer to the nearest immigration office).

It is understood that if there were no such travel restrictions, the status would read: “Tiada halangan” (No restrictions).

Their identity card details, said the report, were gleaned from 1MDB company information furnished by the Companies Commission of Malaysia, and uploaded on the website rafiziramli.com.

Previously, local news portals had claimed that Arul Kanda and several other individuals have been barred from leaving Malaysia following an investigation into the strategic investment company.

Two other people who had been blacklisted from traveling abroad are former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor. The directive, issued by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, was verified by the Immigration Department last Saturday.
