Thousands in Padang Timur eagerly await glimpse of Anwar

PETALING JAYA: Padang Timur in Petaling Jaya has been transformed into a sea of people, all eager to welcome newly-freed Pakatan Harapan de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar is expected to make his first speech to PH supporters at a rally after being granted a royal pardon by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V earlier today. Prominent PH leaders are also expected to be in attendance.

Thousands of supporters have made their way to the field, some as early as 6pm, to show their support for the 70-year-old. The roads leading up to the assembly point, from the Federal Highway all the way up to Jalan Utara, were congested.

Anwar was given a five-year jail sentence in 2015 after being convicted of a sodomy charge. He has maintained that the charges were politically-motivated.--Report by Veena Babulal, Mohd Iskandar Ibrahim, Mohd Nasaruddin Parzi and Faris Fuad
