Special taskforce set up to address issues faced by minorities: PM

PETALING JAYA: The government has established a taskforce which will look into problems faced by disadvantaged minority communities in Malaysia.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the team was formed to address issues faced by the Indian and Orang Asli communities, as well as women and youths.

“We have promised that we will give our attention to problems faced by minorities. (But above all, we will look at issues faced by) people of Indian heritage,” he said during a press conference at Yayasan Selangor here today.

Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) manifesto, themed “Building a nation that fulfils the hopes of the people,” outlines five core thrusts encompassing 69 pledges.

Out of the 69 pledges, 25 focus on the Indian community and include resolving the issues of stateless Indians within 100 days of PH coming into power; and the setting up of the Hindu Wakaf Board at the state level, according to the model of the Penang Hindu Wakaf Board in Kedah, Perak, Selangor, Pahang, Negri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor. -- Reporting by Tasnim Lokman, Nor Ain Mohamed Radhi, Manirajan Ramsamy, Arfa Yunus, Rohaniza Idris, Luqman Arif Abdul Karim, Ahmad Suhael Adnan and Teh Athira Yusof
