Daim to announce toll abolition details next week

KUALA LUMPUR: Eminent Persons Council member Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz says an announcement will be made on the abolition of road tolls next week.

“The announcement will be made by Tun Daim Zainuddin,” the former Bank Negara governor said after a discussion on the issue led by the former finance minister this morning.

Present were former Petronas president and chief executive officer Tan Sri Mohd Hassan Marican, economist Professor Jomo Kwame Sundaram and tycoon Tan Sri Robert Kuok.

Employees Provident Fund chief executive officer Datuk Shahril Ridza Ridzuan said they were looking for the best solution.

He said industry players were concerned because a lot of money was invested to build the highways.

“We have to be mindful that a lot of money was invested through the capital markets. There’s a need for balance,” he said.

Khazanah Nasional Bhd managing director Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar said: "We had a good discussion. Today was about tabling the facts the issues and beginning to look at how to address the issue of tolls. As you know, it has become one of the promises of the new government. So we're working with the council. We're not ready to say anything. In any case the official line should come from the council or the Government."
