Crowd throng Pasir Mas' Kampung Gaung for delicious 'akok Risda'

KOTA BARU: Every Ramadan, hundreds of people will make a beeline at a stall along Jalan Pasir Mas-Rantau Panjang in Kampung Gaung, Pasir Mas, all for the tasty 'akok', a traditional Kelantan delicacy made of eggs, sugar, coconut extract and rice flour.

This year is no different. The cake, known as 'akok bunga Risda', continue to be a hot seller among locals.

According to its seller, Norlidawatie Kamaruzaman, her family prepared 3,000 of the cakes daily for this fasting month in anticipation of the high demand.

She said all are snapped up by customers within six hours.

Last year, Harian Metro reported that the family prepared only 1,500 of the traditionally-cooked 'akok' daily during Ramadan.

"It is our special family recipe and we have been doing this for the past 21 years." said the 27-year-old.

She said customers started coming about noon and were willing to brave the long queue for the delicacy.

"Most of those here comprised of regular customers but there are also new ones who want to try our delicious cake." she said.
