Graft trial, allegations politically motivated, says Guan Eng

PUTRAJAYA: Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng says his corruption trial and the allegations made against him are politically motivated.

“All allegations (made against me) are political attacks by the previous government. Let the process run its due course,” he said after attending a series of meetings with ministry officials.

It was reported that the High Court in Penang had set 23 days of trial for the corruption and abetment case involving Guan Eng and businesswoman Phang Li Koon.

The DAP secretary-general is facing charges of using his position as Penang chief minister to acquire a plot of land and a bungalow under market value.

He is also charged with gaining gratification for himself and his wife, Betty Chew Gek Cheng, by approving an application for the conversion of agricultural land to a public housing zone in Balik Pulau to a company.

It was reported that Lim’s corruption case had been postponed until July 30 for mention pending a review of the charges and its withdrawal by the new attorney-general.

Asked for his take on being in the Federal Government, Lim said he was glad to be part of it.

“This government believes it can strengthen the country’s fiscal health,” he added.
