Prices of meat depend on supply and demand- Fama

ALOR SETAR: The prices of meat depend on supply and demand, said Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama).

Fama state director, Anuar Mohamed, said it did not rule out possibility that the price increase of the item spread through social media was caused by unscrupulous traders who took advantage of the festive season.

He said the prices of meat in the state were under control and kept between RM32 and RM33 per kg.

“We don’t expect any issues even with Raya approaching. Fama does not control the prices (of meat) as it depends on the demand and supply factor.

“However, in terms issuance of permits, it is under the purview of the Veterinary Services Department.

“I think the issue of price hike should not arise. We hope that the traders do not take advantage... we fear that (it might happen),” he said when contacted today.

Anuar said Kedah Fama has allocated 52 market sites state-wide for traders to sell food supply including meat.

“This include permanent pasar tani located in among others, Kulim, Changlun, Kuala Kedah and Guar Chempedak. The others are open at lest once a week.

“It is our responsibility to provide locations for the traders but the prices of the item is not in our hands,” he said.
