Two schools to represent Malaysia in World Adolescent Robot Contest

PUTRAJAYA: SMK Putrajaya Presint 8 (1) here and SM Sains Kota Tinggi, Johor, will represent the country at the World Adolescent Robot Contest (WARC) 2018 at Guizhou University, Guiyang, China, from July 19 to 26.

The schools’ teams took part in a national-level contest last year organised by Sasbadi Holdings Bhd (Sasbadi) with the cooperation of the Education Ministry.

SMK Putrajaya Presint 8 (1) teacher Rizawani Mustafa , today said this was the first time a team from the school was invited to participate in an international robotics competition.

“The students will use Lego Mindstorms EV3, which costs about RM2,900, in the competition,” said the history teacher, who mentors the school’s participants.

“We were informed about this earlier this month. We were certainly happy and surprised.

“The three students in our team have undergone two weeks of training with assistance from Sasbadi.”

She said the participants must ensure that their robot completed the mission.

“The jury would evaluate on the scoring as well as the robot’s agility.

“The participants will be quarantined for two hours, without their teachers. “They have to assemble the robot and programme it using a laptop.

“After all the tasks have been completed, the robot will proceed with the mission.”

Participants from 58 countries are taking part in WARC.

“We are aware that we will face fierce competition from the other participants,” said Syazani Zikry Zahari, one of the participants from SMK Putrajaya Presint 8 (1).

“Some participants, especially those from Russia and Japan, often come first and second in international robotic competitions.”
