(Update) Wan Azizah: EPF for housewives to come from husbands' 11pct deduction

HULU SELANGOR: The proposal for housewives to receive Employees Provident Fund (EPF) contributions equivalent to two per cent of their husbands’ salaries does not involve additional deduction from their husbands' earnings.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said this after it was reported that some men were opposed to the proposal.

“There is no additional contribution. The two per cent will come from the existing 11 per cent that they have been contributing to EPF. This deduction is a tribute to the wives,” said Dr Wan Azizah, who is also the women, family and community development minister.

She said she would discuss the mechanisms for implementing the deduction with EPF chief executive officer Datuk Shahril Ridza Ridzuan on Thursday.

The EPF contribution for housewives is one of the pledges made by Pakatan Harapan in its election manifesto.

Apart from the deduction, the proposal includes a RM50 allocation from the government.
