Penang CM, excos to take 10pct pay cut; deduction goes to Tabung Harapan (NSTTV)

GEORGE TOWN: Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and his 10 state executive councillors (excos) will take a 10 per cent pay cut effective next month.

The deduction will be made from their basic salaries.

The chief minister’s monthly pay will be cut by RM1,417.51, while excos will each undergo a RM1,210.92 monthly deduction.

Speaking at a press conference at his office in Komtar today, Chow said that the decision was made unanimously during a state exco meeting yesterday.

“The 10 per cent pay cut will (remain in effect) until there is a further instruction to end it.

“The (monthly amount, totalling) RM13,526.80, will be channelled directly to the Tabung Harapan Malaysia, which was launched yesterday,” he said.

Chow said that the Penang government is concerned over the country’s debt.

“We are committed to playing our part to help alleviate the burden,” he added.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Cabinet ministers recently agreed to a 10 per cent pay cut, effective immediately .

Yesterday, the state governments of Johor and Kedah Kedah also made a similar announcement.
