Form an independent body to oversee new laws on political funding, says NCCPF chief

KUALA LUMPUR: There must be an independent body to oversee any new laws regarding political funding, National Consultative Council on Political Funding (NCCPF) chief Amerul Muner Mohammad said.

Amerul said this is to ensure that political donations will not be misused, adding that the proposed laws must cover both candidates during election periods and political parties outside the campaigning periods.

He also noted that the proposal by NCCPF was made to the previous government two years ago.

“The committee’s earlier proposal was only on political financing but maybe we should look at a total review of the entire system.

“At the moment, the focus is only on candidates during general elections. However, there are many other ‘activities’ happening outside campaigning period,” he told the media when met at Ilham Tower after meeting the Committee of Institutional Reforms (IRC) here today.
