Rais to meet PM on dissolution of National Council of Professors

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Umno minister Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim informed he will be meeting the Prime Minister along with the National Council of Professors with regard to the council's dissolution.

It was earlier announced by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad that the council will be dissolved as he found it had been riddled with too many political elements which led to it being abused by the previous administration.

The dissolution, along with several other agencies, namely; the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD), Special Affairs Department (JASA) and Federal Village Development and Security Committee (JKKKP) is expected to save the government around RM500 million annually.

Taking to Twitter tonight, Dr Rais said the dissolution of the council which has 14 groups of researchers and 2,900 members nationwide should be reviewed.

"They utilise a small amount of funding but their research is valuable," he said, adding that the council presently remains a body under the Societies Act.

"Will meet the PM together," Dr Rais said, presumably to discuss a possible review of the decision to disband the council.
