Shoppers, retailers take advantage of tax holiday [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: Shoppers are taking full advantage of discounted sales taking place in the initial days of the three month tax free period June 1 and Aug 31.

This follows the taking effect of the sero rated Goods and Services Tax (GST) on June and the Sales and Services Tax (SST) which will come into effect from Sept1.

Checks by NSTP reporters at Mid Valley Megamall saw excited consumers browsing through new gadgets and electronic items after the zero rated GST came into effect.

Oppo salesperson Robiatul Adawiya Yada said since the announcement Oppo mobile phone saw a jump in sales.

“Customers who had been eyeing on the Oppo F7 Pro had been making a beeline to our store to buy it. Most of the consumers choose Oppo F7 Pro due to its ram and memory capacity,” she said.

Foreign student, Raphael Geyer from Austria said he saved up almost RM600 buying a new computer.

“A few weeks before the price of the whole computer set cost around RM7,500 and today I bought the entire set amounting only RM6,900. Maybe there is also an in-house sale on top of the zero GST,” he said.

Father of four, Mohammad Hassan, said he is keen to buy a new LED TV the reduce in price.

“I am not looking for any specific brand for now, but still surveying for a cheap price LED TV. I had my eyes on a few but need to do more survey before I get one,” he said.

Samsung mobile phone salesperson Nor Apizi Abd Aziz also agreed that more people are going out to get themselves a new mobile phone.

“Most of our customers are looking at upgrading their mobile phones to the latest version with bigger memory space. I think this is the best time to get it as there is no tax imposed,” she said.

Sony salesperson who declined to be identified said that apart from the zero per cent GST they are also offering another 10 per cent festive sales on top of the tax holiday.

“A Sony Bravia 65 inch TV which previously cost RM18,699 is now only RM17,640. So this is the best time for our customers to get a new TV,” he said.
