It's 'makmur kurang gula' for Dr Mahathir

KUALA LUMPUR: Seeing the lighter side of politicians and celebrities is always something welcomed by members of the public.

In the case of 92-year-old prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is admired and idolised by many, this can perhaps be attributed to him bearing more of his lighter side over the past few years.

In another Hari Raya video uploaded on YouTube today, Dr Mahathir answers some light questions before proceeding to impart advise on food intake and driving home for the festivities.

"Tomorrow we will celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri. On this last day (of Ramadan) I still have a tonne of work to do, I have to work until evening, I can't rest," he remarked.

"To those of you on your way back to your hometowns, remember that your family is waiting for you, don't disappoint them by getting involved in an accident," Dr Mahathir said.

He reminded drivers not to rush just to arrive home a few minutes earlier than normal because that may result in an accident.

Touching on food, he said not to eat too much.

"Don't eat too much, eat in moderation, maybe a little more than normal, but don't be greedy," he said.

When asked what his favourite raya cookie is, Dr Mahathir said 'kuih makmur' but was quick to add 'kurang gula' (less sugar) after that.

He revealed he likes blue-coloured baju Melayu and enjoys the late Sudirman's Raya song.

Touching on his most memorable Raya, Dr Mahathir recalled how one particular Raya when all of his family members managed to return and gather.

"There was one Raya, everyone was there. Sometimes some cannot make it, so it is not so joyful. But this one year, all of us managed to gather and take a group photo," he said.

Meanwhile, the prime minister wished Muslims Selamat Hari Raya and invited everyone to his Raya Open House tomorrow.
