CAP calls on people to cultivate organic plants

GEORGE TOWN: The Consumers’ Association of Penang’s (CAP) today urged the people to engage in cultivating organic plants in an effort to increase consumer awareness about the benefits of organic crops.

Its education officer N.V. Subbarow said CAP was aware that the issue of fake food has led many consumers to have doubts about the food.

According to him, CAP has been paying close attention to organic crops and has taken several steps to ensure consumers can obtain or provide organic herbs in an easy way.

“One of the initiatives taken by CAP is to cultivate an Organic Garden where plants are free from any chemical content, such as cats whiskers, mint leaves, basil leaves, curry leaves, pumpkins, petola, aloe vera, papaya tree, rambutan tree, neem tree, corn, okra and lemon grass,” he told Bernama here.

Subbarow said the organic garden area was approximately 0.2 hecatres and used some additional solutions such as ‘Panchakavya’, ‘fish amino acid’ and ‘Farmers EM’ to ensure fertility and increase growth rate of plants naturally.

He added that some of the plants in the CAP Organic Garden look very different in terms of size, colour, taste and texture compared to the crops sold in the market.

Meanwhile, another CAP education officer O.Saraswathi said CAP had also published a magazine titled

‘Dari Kebun ke Pinggan’ (From the Garden to the Plate) which contains important information on how to cook 10 types of herbal plants for health, such as curing diseases like diabetes, hypertension, kidney stones and enhancing the functioning of internal organs such as the heart and the womb.

She said the magazines published in three languages, namely Malay, Tamil and English are available at selected bookstores as well as at the CAP office and costs RM4 per copy. - Bernama
