Lack of assets hampers fire fighting at illegal dumping site

SERDANG: The lack of logistic assets has hampered fire fighting efforts at an illegal dumping site for the past three days in Taman Pinggiran Putera here.

Serdang Fire and Rescue Station chief PB Zolkipli Sailan said firefighters were having a tough time putting out the fire at the 0.8 hectares of illegal dumping site which is located less than 100m from a residential area.

He said although firemen had been working round the clock for the last three days, they could not put out the fire.

“Firemen are doing their best to put out the fire. It is just not effective enough. We need more assets such as excavators, bulldozers, and helicopters to unearth the rubbish and douse the fire,” he said.

Zolkipli said insufficient assets was among main cause for the delay and they had asked the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) and Department of Environment (DOE) to help.

He said the agencies were expected to hold a meeting at the dumping site on Monday morning to discuss on the most feasible way to control and put out the flames soonest.

Eighty per cent of the total 0.8 hectares of illegal dump site has been burning since Raya eve.

Apart from triggering respiratory issues for residents nearby, the smoke has also caused haze in the surroundings.

Zolkipli said firemen from Cyberjaya and Puchong station had been roped in to help put out the fire.
