Dad defends Guan Eng, says public must know of scandals

PETALING JAYA: DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang has come out in defense of his son Lim Guan Eng's move to continue revealing scandals of the previous government in an effort to develop a new Malaysia.

Guan Eng who is the Finance Minister was previously advised by PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to leave the job of revealing past misconducts of the Barisan Nasional (BN) government to other ministers or agency and to instead focus on increasing foreign investors' confidence.

Kit Siang in a response said eventhough the revelations have positive and negative implications, he believed the public should be informed of any misconducts.

"I think we should discuss all misconducts, scandals and corrupt practices of the previous government. Things like that should not be kept quiet," Kit Siang told members of the press today.

The DAP adviser was asked to comment on Anwar's advise that Guan Eng be wise in balancing between the importance of exposing misconducts and increasing investors' confidence, considering the fact that the role of Finance Minister was more sensitive in nature.

Prior to that, Guan Eng had announced that there would be more revelations made on scandals of the past government within the Finance Ministry.

Kit Siang remarked that there was nothing wrong in revealing misconducts as he himself had been doing it for the past 52 years.

"A minister who knows of a misconduct must reveal it, to avoid being asked later on why did they keep quiet over such matters," he said.

In other development, Kit Siang said the Anti Fake News Act 2018 should be repealed, claiming it was merely used to protect the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.

"I support such laws but I am against those who approved it because it was not in the best interest of the rakyat," he said.

Kit Siang was speaking at a press conference to announce a new DAP member, community activist Heidy Quah, 24.

Also present was Segambut parliamentarian Hannah Yeoh.

Meanwhile, Kit Siang also received a donation from 12-year-old Ervin Devadasan for Tabung Harapan Malaysia.

Ervin had saved up the money for six months to buy a drum set but changed his mind and decided to donate to the fund instead.

As of 3pm yesterday, Tabung Harapan Malaysia has collected RM88.36 million.
