Listen to Anwar, KJ tells Guan Eng

KUALA LUMPUR: Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng should heed PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s advice on striking a balance between exposing financial scandals and inspiring confidence among investors.

Umno Youth chief and Rembau lawmaker Khairy Jamaluddin said as a finance minister, Lim must be able to instil confidence in investors and the market.

“That is within the job scope of a finance minister, other than managing the people’s wealth prudently and transparently.

“(We need to be sensitive) towards baseless concerns and worries among the international investors. (We need to) explain the position of our economy. (These include) foreign direct investments and the capital market.

“If there are statements that can elicit unsubstantiated concerns, surely it will (also) affect Malaysians’ confidence (in the economy),” Khairy said when met today at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC).

It was reported yesterday during an interview with Astro Awani that Anwar had advised Lim to exercise caution when exposing financial scandals allegedly committed by the previous government as the post of finance minister is more sensitive in nature.

Khairy said Lim must be judicious in his attempts to rectify what had been construed as discrepancies, refrain from employing inaccurate figures and issuing statements that could be misinterpreted.

“Anwar’s advice should be accepted by Lim so that the latter can improve his approach, instead of only being seen as an ‘exposé minister’ who issues worrisome statements," Khairy said.
