O-negative blood supply sufficient

KLANG: The Tengku Ampuan Rahimah (HTAR) Hospital has shot down claims by a patient’s next-of-kin that the O-negative blood supply is depleting.

HTAR director Dr Mohamad Sabri Othman said such claims which had gone viral on social media platforms was untrue.

He added that HTAR viewed the matter seriously and urged members of the public not to believe the fake information and refrain from circulating it.

“Our investigations showed that the O-negative blood supply is enough at the moment. We have also given sufficient blood supply to the patient,” he said in a statement today.

Dr Mohamad Sabri added that O-negative blood type is categorised as a rare blood group.

All blood banks, he said, does not keep a lot of stock at one time.

“However, the current stock is sufficient for emergency needs. HTAR also has a list of rare blood donors who can be called at any time especially during an emergency,” he said.

In the message that has spread on Facebook and Whatsapp, the next-of-kin had pleaded for O-negative blood individuals to come forward and donate to her critically ill mother who is warded at HTAR’s intensive care unit.

The message read: “Blood is still flowing out. Platelets is low. The supply for O-negative at the hospital is depleting. Hope anyone can assist to donate blood at HTAR, Klang.”
