Siti Kassim released; court dismisses cop's remand bid [NSTTV]

KAJANG: Police have released lawyer and activist Siti Zabedah Kassim, after the magistrate's court rejected an application for a remand order against her.

Zabedah, also known as Siti Kasim was arrested last night for allegedly kidnapping her own client from a hospital and obstructing the police from carrying out their duties.

She was then held at the Kajang district police headquarters.

The police's four-day order was rejected by Registrar Sharifah Fadzillah Zolfikli.

Kajang police chief Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Dzaffir Mohd Yusoff said nonetheless, investigation on the case is still ongoing.

"Last night at 9pm, we raided a house in Segambut and rescued a 24-year-old woman who was reported to have been kidnapped and took her to the police station for further action.

"Miss Siti Kassim came to the police headquarters around midnight and police detained her to assist the investigation,"

"This morning, we applied for a remand order but it was rejected. She will be released this afternoon," he said.

Dzaffir said the case, investigated under Section 363 and 186 of the Penal Code, will be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor's once it has been completed.

He also dismissed claims on social media that police did not have the power to detain Siti Kassim, saying that actions taken by the police were done in accordance with the law.

Meanwhile, Siti Kassim said she had given her full cooperation to the police with regards to the case.

"I was merely executing my duty as a lawyer. There are many layers to this case and I understand that the police have yet to get the entire picture.

"The magistrate's court has rejected the remand order after it has been informed of what was happening," she said.

It was reported that her client's mother had lodged a police report on June 21 claiming that Siti Kassim had abducted the woman who was undergoing psychiatric treatment at the Kajang Hospital.

A report was also lodged against Siti Kassim by a police personnel who was escorting the woman at the hospital.
