Shops selling fake Kia, Hyundai car replacement parts uncovered

SHAH ALAM: The tactic of premises selling fake Kia and Hyundai car replacement parts around Shah Alam, Gombak and Puchong, Selangor, was uncovered after the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK) raided the premises on Wednesday and today. Selangor KPDNKK Enforcement Chief Azman Adam said in the raids, conducted based on public information, six premises selling car replacement parts were inspected and two were detected selling fake replacement parts.

“In this operation, 123 fake replacement parts of various types for Hyundai and Kia brands such as oil filters, air filters, fuel filters and timing belts worth about RM24,060 were confiscated. “The investigation found that the premises showcase fake and original car replacement parts together to fool the authorities and make exorbitant profits,” he said in a press conference at the Selangor KPDNKK office here today.

An initial investigation of the premises owners found that the fake replacement parts were sourced from suppliers in Kuala Lumpur and the investigation would proceed to confirm whether the allegation was true or otherwise.

Azman said the investigation found that the premises sold the fake items at almost the same price as genuine products where many consumers were deceived to buy the fake ones which could damage their vehicles.

“There were also premises inspected which sold fake replacement parts at more than 30 percent of the original prices,” he said.

The case was being investigated under Section 8 (2) (b) of the Trade Descriptions Act 2011.

In another development, Azman said 678 public complaints on goods and services tax (GST) were received since the tax was implemented at zero rate since June 1.

Following the complaint, his department investigated 3,778 premises in some places in Selangor involving 81,006 items with 102 warnings issued to traders who were still reluctant to lower prices of goods following the implementation of the zero-rate GST. -- Bernama
