Zahid to meet MACC officers today

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirmed that he will meet Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commisson (MACC) officers in Putrajaya today to give a statement on the role of a foundation set up by his family.

He said yesterday that the foundation had been carrying out charity work, such as building mosques, religious schools, orphanages and organising welfare activities.

“It is owned by my family. Its role is to carry out charity work.

“It is in line with Islamic laws. The foundation is funded by me and a few friends. That is what I will tell MACC tomorrow (today).” It was reported that Zahid is the chairman of the foundation, which was set up in 1997. The foundation is known to have received funds to manage poverty cases. However, it has found itself mired in allegations that it has been used for personal gain by Zahid and his family.

MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (operation) Datuk Azam Baki confirmed that he had contacted Zahid, requesting that the latter go to the MACC headquarters today. Additional reporting by Syed Umar Ariff
