Najib's arrest gets mixed reactions

KUALA LUMPUR: The arrest of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has received mixed reactions from within and outside the country.

Former PetroSaudi International Ltd officer Xavier Andre Justo, said the arrest was a long-awaited moment which offers satisfaction for him and family.

"This is a moment to savour for me and my family, because we had paid a high price for revealing the scandal.

"We will only rest when all his colleagues are jailed. There is actually still a lot of work that needs to be done.

"When all the criminals are arrested and Malaysia fully recovers, we will celebrate," he said when contacted via Facebook.

Justo also claimed that PetroSaudi's top rank officers Tarek Obaid and Patrick Mahony stole half a billion dollars from Malaysians. Both were only investigated but not jailed for the serious crime.

"It's high time for all these criminals to be put in jail. I suffered 18 months in prison for disclosing the crime. I hope they will spend a much longer time in jail.

"Besides, I also feel honoured to be able to assist in investigating the case. This is a good day to celebrate indeed," he said.

Meanwhile, PKR vice-president Mohd Rafizi Ramli, said although he was among the vociferous critics of the former Prime Minister, he still prays for justice for him and family.

"I am one of those who criticised him a lot. But I pray he would be treated well as a former Prime Minister, with dignity and honour.

"I pray that he and his family will be judged accordingly, that's the struggle for reform," he said through his Twitter account.

Reactions from the opposition side differ with the Wanita Umno calling on the public to pray for the wellbeing of the former Umno president.

Its chairman Datuk Noraini Ahmad, said Wanita Umno expressed their sadness over the arrest of the former Prime Minister and has demanded justice.

"We urge that he be fully entitled to a fair and transparent trial, and be given proper treatment throughout the arrest and prosecution period," she said.

In a related development, Pemantau Malaysia Baru president Lokman Adam, wanted to hold a solidarity rally at the MACC headquarters tonight in protest against Najib's arrest.

Earlier today, the Pekan MP was arrested by the MACC at his residence in Langgak Duta at about 2.35 pm.

The 1MDB Special Task Force in a statement today confirmed the arrest in relation to SRC International Sdn Bhd.

According to the statement, Najib will be charged at 8.30am tomorrow at the Kuala Lumpur Court.
