A-G's appointment legit, says minister

SANDAKAN: The appointment of the Attorney-General (A-G) was valid and should not be questioned anymore.

This was because the appointment was consented by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department in charge of Judicial Affairs, Datuk Liew Vui Keong.

On that note, he said there was no issue on sacking Tommy Thomas as the government had considered all aspects in appointing him as A-G.

"The government, led by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had appointed the A-G and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V already gave his consent.

"Legally, it is confirmed and more importantly, the King consented and accepted the appointment," he told reporters on the sidelines of the Batu Sapi MP mobile counter programme at Pasar Bandar Ramai-Ramai, here, today.

Liew was asked to comment on the online petition calling for Thomas to be sacked.

On Wednesday, an individual by the name of 'Fyizuddin Jaafar' started an online petition to gather 2,500 signatures to call for the removal of the A-G because of his poor command of the Malay language.
