1MDB scandal: Probe into alleged domestic crimes complete; focus turns abroad

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is now turning its focus on alleged offences linked to 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and SRC International Sdn Bhd which were committed overseas.

MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Mohd Shukri Abdull said on the domestic front, the probe into the case is almost “100 per cent” complete.

Mohd Shukri was clarifying his statement made yesterday, when he said the 1MDB investigation is “50 per cent complete.”

He explained that half of the alleged offences took place locally, while the rest occurred overseas, and that the domestic investigation was being wrapped up.

“We have received 50 per cent of the local evidence, and we are now focusing on gathering the remaining 50 per cent from overseas.

“(So) we are still investigating the case,” he told a media conference at the closing ceremony of the Walk Stop Talk: Six Hours Quarter Millions Messages Programme at City Hall here today.

Also present was Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

On July 4, former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was slapped with three counts of criminal breach of trust and one count of abuse of power for gratification involving RM4 billion from SRC International Sdn Bhd since 2011.

Meanwhile, on Najib’s legal suit over the freezing of his children’s bank accounts, Mohd Shukri said it is the Pekan MB’s right to take action.

“If he wants to file a legal suit against me, then it is within his rights. Let the court decide,” he said.

It was reported that Najib filed lawsuits against Mohd Shukri, federal police Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Datuk Seri Amar Singh, and Attorney-General Tommy Thomas, who are probing the multi-billion dollar 1MDB scandal, in what appears to be an attempt to clamp down on public criticism over his alleged role in the case.
