Communications and Multimedia Ministry to combat child pornography

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will go all out with its efforts to eradicate child pornography by developing various strategies with relevant authorities.

Communications and Multimedia Deputy Minister Eddin Syazlee Shith said child pornography was a serious and important issue, and demands the ministry’s full attention.

“Combating this activity is our ultimate goal. I believe there already are cooperative efforts in place with the police, but it has yet to be decided in what form we shall develop this further to eradicate pornography,” he said when met at the Mestika D’Klasik concert ceremony held in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri with Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), here today.

New Straits Times published a special report yesterday which described the newly-launched Malaysia Internet Crime Against Children Investigation Unit (Micac) which will monitor traffic at pornographic websites, especially those offering child porn.

Sexual, Women and Child Investigation Division principal assistant director Assistant Commissioner Ong Chin Lan was reported to have said that the monitoring software, known as the Internet Crime Against Children — Child Online Protective Services would locate and pinpoint in real time, 24-hours a week, Internet users surfing these sites and build a “data library” of these individuals.

They will be categorised under which portals they frequent, how long they spend on the sites, and the files they upload and download.

She further elaborated that Micac had the power to seize handphones, computers or laptops to check for pornographic material, because under Section 292 of the Penal Code, it is an offence to download or upload pornographic material.

Also present at the event were Secretary-General of the Communications and Multimedia Ministry, Datuk Dr Mohd Ali Mohamad Nor, Deputy Director-General of Strategic Broadcasting RTM, Tuan Haji Abdul Muis Shefii and RTM staff.
