Asian countries to showcase resilience in US-China trade war - Zeti

KUALA LUMPUR: Asian countries are poised to demonstrate their respective economic resilience in the wake of the ongoing trade war between the United States and China.

Permodalan Nasional Bhd group chairman and former Bank Negara Malaysia governor, Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz, said such a trade war would not benefit any party, but Asian countries are standing ready to withstand its effects.

Zeti was commenting on reports concerning the recent spat between world giant economies US and China, which saw the latter vowing to “fight back“ against US President Donald Trump administration’s plans to impose tariffs on an additional US$200 billion in Chinese goods.

“It is kind of global trade war and it doesn’t benefit anyone.

“But I believe in the resilience of the Asian economy and we will demonstrate that resilience going forward,” Zeti told the media when met outside Ilham Tower on Wednesday.

Zeti is a part of the Council of Eminent Persons, which had been holding meetings with industry captains as part of government plans to improve the country’s economy and fiscal policies.

She however declined to divulge details on Tuesday’s sessions. The session was scheduled to feature Nor Zahidi Alias, chief economist of Malaysia Rating Corp Bhd; Harinder Palsingh, advisor to the Federation of Investment Managers Malaysia (FIMM); Sam Ng Soon Lee, president of Remisiers Association of Malaysia (PERSAMA) as well as Persama committee member Pat Chegne.
