Budi-Petronas workshop benefits 150 MRSM students

KOTA KINABALU: Petronas continues to empower young people in Sabah by sponsoring 150 Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) students to its three-day intensive workshop to build up their potential and skills.

The Budi-Petronas programme, which started on July 20 was aimed at nurturing soft skills, teamwork and leadership skills, as well as helping students to maximise their full potential.

The participating students were from MRSM Kota Kinabalu, MRSM Sandakan and MRSM Tawau.

During the workshop, they took part in a student development programme, science activities and career talk facilitated by trainers and facilitators from the Petronas Leadership Centre, Petrosains and Universiti Teknologi Petronas.

Throughout the workshop, Muktajal Yacob from MRSM Sandakan said the group were encouraged to think critically in solving problems.

“I have learnt a lot through this workshop. We had a chance to work with friends from other MRSMs. It was truly an unforgettable experience,” he said.

The workshop was opened by Sabah Resource Development and Information Technology Ministry permanent secretary Datuk Bruno Vun.

Also present were Petronas’ Sabah Labuan regional office head Rokiah Sulaiman and Sabah Mara director Suhaimi Zainuddin.

The Budi-Petronas programme is a collaboration with Mara, and it provides sponsorship to selected students from less privileged families, studying at the three MRSMs in Sabah and three MRSMs in Sarawak.

Under this sponsorship, students would receive yearly education allowances to pay for their school uniforms, text books, sports attire, learning aid and other basic necessities.

The programme aims to help the students in their academic performance and nurture their interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects.

To date, a total of 237 students from Sabah have benefited from the Budi-Petronas programme since 2015.
