KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) has asked the Education Ministry to review the curriculum of the Unified Examination Certificate (EC), especially core subjects such as Bahasa Melayu and History, before it is accorded recognition.
DBP organising board chairman, Prof Dr Mohamad Hatta Shaharom, said a review of the subjects should be included in the comprehensive and holistic review which will be undertaken by the ministry.
“The review is necessary to ensure that the standard of Bahasa Melayu (in the UEC) is of the same level as that taught in government schools.
“If the standards are the same, then that is a positive development. But if it is the reverse, then it becomes part of the continuing debate,” he told a press conference on Friday.
Mohamad Hatta said, the UEC should also stress on the History subject as it provides the basis of understanding the nation’s history, as well as for self-development.
