MonSpace pledges to work with authorities [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: MonSpace Sdn Bhd has pledged to cooperate with the authorities in an on-going investigation on the e-commerce company, believing the probe will prove that its businesses are legal and legitimate.

Its founder and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Jessy Lai in a press conference today said the authorities had the right to conduct the raid and investigations.

“The investigation is being conducted under Section 27B of the Direct Sales and Anti-Pyramid Act, I think it is fair," Lai said.

She noted that since its inception in 2014, there had been doubts if MonSpace was involved in money scheme.

Thus, she said, the investigation was a good chance for them to clear the air on their operations.

“All companies and organisations under MonSpace have been running legal and legitimate businesses. None of them have ever been involved in any form of purported money game,” said Lai.

16 MonSpace premises across Ipoh and the Klang Valley were raided for allegedly running an illegal investment or “money game” scheme in a joint-operation on Tuesday.

The operation, codenamed “Ops Coin“, saw the involvement of various authorities including the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry, police, Bank Negara Malaysia and the Attorney-General’s National Revenue Recovery Enforcement Team, among others.

Following the operation, up to 72 bank accounts linked to the company worth RM5.86 million have been frozen by the authorities.

Asked on the frozen accounts, Lai said she was only aware that 15 accounts under the MonSpace headquarters in Bukit Jalil were frozen, adding that she would find out what were the remaining accounts that had also been frozen.

She said despite the on-going investigation, the company was still operating as usual.

When asked on a travel ban against her, Lai confirmed she had been blacklisted by the Immigration Department upon request by the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry.

“My next scheduled overseas plan is on Oct 4 to France. But, I will stay in the country to assist with the investigation.”

She also clarified that MonSpace was not blacklisted under Bank Negara’s Financial Consumer Alert list, saying that the company was on the watchlist.

Meanwhile, she expressed regret over sensationalised rumours spread by certain parties that had distorted the content of the press conference held by the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry's enforcement director, Datuk Mohd Roslan Mahayudin.

She claimed that some people who had personal agenda had intentionally inflated the number of enforcement officers involved and cash seized in the operation.
