Ride-hailing will not be implemented due to high accident rate involving motorcyclists

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is not ready to implement ride-hailing due to the high rate of motorcycle accidents, said Transport Minister, Anthony Loke.

Loke said the implementation of ride hailing required a high standard of safety before it could be realised and authorities responsible such as the Land Public Transport Agency (SPAD) need to conduct a comprehensive study before implementing ride hailing.

“We have just introduced e-hailing for cars... and it has already become a big issue, so for now, the government is not ready to approve ride hailing,” he said during a question and answer session in the Dewan Rakyat here today.

Meanwhile, Anthony reiterated that the MRT Line 3 project would be postponed and not scrapped.

He also said the government did not deny the benefit that the people could get from the project.

“We do not deny that the project will benefit the people, but we are also looking at the cost benefit due to the high national debt,” he said adding that to facilitate commuters, the government would consider adding more bus services and frequent KTM train services.

He was replying to Khairy Jamaluddin (BN-Rembau), who asked the transport minister to state the rationale for cancelling the MRT Line 3 project as well as the implications this would have on finances, road congestion, the urban growth network and consumer comfort.
