PORT DICKSON: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) today destroyed 864 kilogrammes of ganja (cannabis), valued at RM2.5 million.

Its director general, Datuk Seri Zulkifli Abu Bakar said the drugs were confiscated from seizures made from smugglers between 2010 and last year.

He said the first seizure was made on May 24, 2010 about 3.7 nautical miles off Kuala Perlis.

"MMEA team picked up a black plastic bag from the sea, believed to have been thrown away by smugglers.

"The team found 235 slabs of compressed dried leaves inside the bag, said to be worth about RM705,000." he told reporters at the disposal site in Bukit Pelanduk.

The last seizure, Zulkifli said was made on June 3 last year, off Cupu island near Langkawi.

"Here the team seized 629 slabs of compressed dried leaves, fetching a street value of RM1.8 million.

"All these items were disposed of by smugglers in their escape bid."

Zulkifli said since 2008, MMEA has seized a total of 1.12 tonnes of drugs, worth about RM3.36 million.
