Khairy to lodge MACC report on 'missing' RM18 billion next week

PUTRAJAYA: Rembau Member of Parliament Khairy Jamaluddin is expected to lodge a report next week with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on an allegation that RM18 billion from the Goods and Services Tax (GST) refund account have gone missing.

Khairy’s media officer, Raja Syahrir Raja Abu Bakar, notified the media on Khairy’s intention via WhatsApp today.

“Please be informed that Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin will lodge a report with the MACC on the accusation made by the Finance Minister that RM18 billion has been stolen. Time and date will be (announced) later,” he said.

Khairy was quoted as saying on Thursday that he will lodge a report with the MACC to clear the name of the previous government, led by Barisan Nasional (BN).

He had also challenged Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng in Dewan Rakyat to furnish details on the alleged disappearance, which Lim had described as a “theft.”

Khairy said Lim had made a serious allegation without providing details; however, if there had been any misappropriation, those responsible should face the music.

On Wednesday, during the second reading of the Services Tax Bill 2018 in the Dewan Rakyat, Lim said the monies in question were owed to businesses over the past two years.

He alleged that the BN government had failed to follow GST guidelines and stolen the monies from a trust account from where the tax deduction was supposed to be refunded to businesses.

He said businesses were not paid the input tax credit due to them because the monies which were meant to be deposited into the government’s trust account were moved into a consolidated fund and spent.
