KUALA LUMPUR: The third national car project does not contravene the government’s policy to reduce traffic congestion in the country, says International Trade and Industry Minister Ignatius Darell Leiking.
He said this was because the government would also continue with its plan to provide a more efficient public transportation system.
“I am confident that through the formulation of new policies and the implementation of efficient public transportation system, the people will choose to use public transport,” he said during the question-and-answer session at the Dewan Rakyat sitting here today.
He was replying to a supplementary question from Datuk Rozman Isli (BN-Labuan) over the plan to launch the third national car project that was deemed to be in contravention of the government’s policy to reduce traffic congestion, especially in major urban areas.
In response to another question from Rozman on the launch date of the third national car project, Leiking said the plan was still at the proposal stage.
If it materialised, he said various incentives including tax incentives would be given out to operators involved in accordance with the National Automotive Policy 2018 which would be announced by the Pakatan Harapan government in the near future.
Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in his speech at the 24th International Conference on the Future of Asia, or Nikkei Conference, in Tokyo last June, expressed his ambition to start a new national car project. — BERNAMA
