Works Ministry has asked for report on projects involving delayed payment

KUALA LUMPUR: The Works Ministry will discuss with the Finance Ministry to find out if there are any projects which face delay in payment by the government.

Works Minister Baru Bian said by right, on-going projects under Public Works Department with not more than 15 per cent work in progress should not involve late payment as provisions were provided annually based on projections.

He said additional provisions, if necessary, would be brought to parliament for approval.

“We will check on the matter. Maybe there are some isolated cases.

“Therefore, the ministry is urging Malaysian Malay Contractors Association president Datuk Mokhtar Samad to furnish a complete report on projects involving delayed payment,” he said in a statement today.

He was responding to Mokhtar’s statement yesterday, calling on the government to solve issues pertaining to late payments to contractors.

Baru said not all development projectsere under the Works Ministry, as some were under other ministries, state government or agencies.

“There are projects under Public Private Partnership Unit (UKAS), as well infrastructure projects under the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) of the Prime Minister’s Department,” he said.
