300,000 stateless Indians claim untrue, says deputy home minister

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Home Minister Datuk Mohd Azis Jamman today dismissed the claim that there are 300,000 undocumented Indians in the country.

The figure was widely peddled by Pakatan Harapan while campaigning for the 14th General Election.

“The figure was taken by the opposition (Pakatan Harapan) at the time. It is inaccurate,” he said in response to a supplementary question from Senator Datuk T. Mohan during the question and answer session in Dewan Negara today.

“Based on records up to May 30 this year, 1,638 out of 3,853 citizenship applications from the Indian community have been resolved.”

He said the ministry was organising community outreach programmes to deal with the issue of stateless Indians.
