Call for review of 24-hour launderettes' operating hours

KUALA LUMPUR: The operating hours of self-service launderette outlets especially those on a 24-hour basis should be reviewed to help reduce the risk of robbery at the premises.

Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation senior vice-chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said although the 24-hour self-service laundrette offered customers the convenience of doing their laundry at any time especially when the premises were not packed, it could actually increase the risk of crime.

“Going to the self-service laundrettes after midnight and alone can pose a risk of becoming a robbery victim.

“For those who prefer to go at night, avoid being alone at the premises or go somewhere else to wait for the laundry to be done,” he told Bernama here.

Lee also suggested operators of self-service laundrette outlets to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera system at their premises to facilitate facial identification of the criminals.

He added that frequent patrol by police could also curb crimes at these outlets.
