Govt to announce electricity subsidy scheme for hardcore poor

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is set to announce an electricity subsidy scheme for 179,000 heads of households registered under the e-Kasih programme, soon.

Energy, Technology, Science, Climate Change and Environment Minister Yeo Bee Yin said the new subsidy will be targeted at the underprivileged.

“This aid is specially targeted at the hardcore poor. We aim to carry it out as soon as possible.

“The details are being fine-tuned and will be announced in the near future,” she said.

Yeo was speaking to reporters after officiating the Conference of the Electric Power Supply Industry (Cepsi) 2018.

The six-day conference, carrying the theme ‘Reimagining Utility of the Future’, is hosted by Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) on behalf of the Association of the Electricity Supply Industry of East Asia and Western Pacific (AESIEAP).

On another development, Yeoi said the Energy Efficiency Supply Bill will be tabled in next year’s Parliament session.

“The supply bill will be formulated in mid-October. We will complete it as soon as possible for tabling,” she said.
