Mobile court has helped sort of 40,000 birth certification cases in Sabah

KENINGAU: Some 40,000 cases related to birth certification have been sorted out since the inception of mobile court services in Sabah about 10 years ago.

The services, which is the brainchild of Chief Justice Tan Sri Richard Malanjum, has helped people in rural areas with problems related to their birth certificates.

Richard said the programme, which would go into the interior statewide, would help the people save time and money to resolve issues related to the late registration of birth certificates.

“The law has stated that the birth (of a child) has to be registered (with the National Registration Department) within 42 days,” he said at the “A day with Chief Minister” programme at Keningau Community Hall here.

Richard added that the people in the interior of the state, faced problems with registration due to finances or logistical issues.

On whether there should be leniency with regards the issuance of identity cards, especially for stateless children from local marriages, Richard added that relevant authorities have to abide by the Constitution on Citizenship and Births and Deaths Registration Act 1957.

He added that the mobile services would go to Pensiangan, and the islands in Sandakan and Tawau next month.
