Volunteer squads to deal with disasters at PPRs

KUALA LUMPUR: Volunteer squads consisting of People’s Housing Project (PPR) residents will be set up soon to provide aid in disaster situations at PPRs.

“They will provide early assistance during any disaster situation when rescue agencies are in no time to help,” said Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Hannah Yeoh at the Kuala Lumpur Disaster Management briefing session here today.

“However, we have yet to identify who will be recruited in the squad as it was just being proposed and discussed in today’s meeting.

“The City Hall will decide on when it will be set up and, of course, it will be carried out soon as we are experiencing the monsoon season.”

The Segambut member of parliament said the volunteers would be given training in disaster management.

Yeoh said the Welfare Department, local authorities, City Hall representatives and Federal Territory MPs had discussed and exchanged ideas on disaster management and prevention.

She said they had agreed to boost manpower. Depending on the seriousness of the situation, she added, up to 300 people consisting of personnel from rescue agencies as well as volunteers would be deployed to help.
