PWD completes upgrading works for 122 schools (NSTTV)

TUMPAT: 122 out of 158 schools have been upgraded under the Public Works Department's (PWD) upgrading of dilapidated schools project this year.

JKR director-general Datuk Seri Ir Dr Roslan Md Taha said the project cost RM245 million and utilised the industrialised building system (IBS) technology.

He said the 158 schools were part of phase one and involved schools in the Peninsular.

"PWD was appointed as the agency tasked to execute phase one of the project in the Peninsular, and so far we have completed (upgrading works for) 122 schools.

"The remainder of 36 schools is expected to be fully completed in two to three weeks before we do a handover," he said at a press conference at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Pengkalan Kubor 1, here, today.

Touching on Sabah and Sarawak, Roslan said the project in the two states would be carried out by the state's PWD.

"The implementation of this project in Sabah will involve 37 schools with an allocation of RM164 million. Meanwhile in Sarawak, 50 schools are involved with an allocation of RM130 million," he said.

Roslan added that the project was being carried out according to the needs of the schools via the Education Ministry.

"In areas that are prone to floods, we constructed two-storey buildings and in other areas, we only put up single-storey buildings," he informed.
