Syrian who lived at klia2 for 7 months to be deported home

PUTRAJAYA: A Syrian citizen who was arrested on Oct 2 for living at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2) since March this year will be deported to his home country.

Hassan Al Kontar is under remand for 14 days for staying at klia2’s domestic transfer lounge for seven months after being deported from Cambodia.

Authorities said the move is being made after Hassan rejected offers to live in several Asean countries, as his objective is to move to Canada which can only accept him in two years’ time.

“Malaysia cannot allow him to live at klia2 for 24 months.

“So I hope Hassan will change his mind and stay in countries which are ready to accept him while waiting to migrate to Canada,” Deputy Home Minister Datuk Mohd Azis Jamman told reporters after a National Registration Day celebration at the National Registration Department here today.

Hassan, 36, was detained by police on Monday after being found in a prohibited area of klia2.

In announcing Hassan’s detention on Tuesday, Immigration director-general Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali said the Syrian had also issued several statements to embarrass Malaysia via social media since entering the country on March 7.

He also refused to return to Syria for fear of being forced to become a soldier.
