Zahid ends three days of questioning at MACC

PUTRAJAYA: After three days, Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is finally done giving his statement to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in connection with alleged misappropriation of Yayasan Akal Budi funds.

When he emerged from the building at 7.40pm, the Bagan Datuk member of parliament said: “I am done giving my statement for three days and InsyaAllah today will be my last day.

“For the past three days, I have given my utmost cooperation and have nothing to hide. I have given detailed statement to clarify on the issue as well as help with the investigation.

“I am ready to be called again, should MACC find that all the information that I have given is still not enough.

“I hope that all the information and explanation will help to clarify all the confusion among the public, if any.”

He also urged all parties who are called by the commission to give their full cooperation.

Zahid thanked MACC commissioner, senior officers and officers for being professional throughout the process.

Before heading to the car that was waiting for him, Zahid also thanked the media.

“Thank you for being here to find sensational news. Hopefully, there is no sensational news that I can share with readers and viewers.”

Earlier, Zahid arrived at the MACC building at 9.18am, before he went on a break between 12.30 and 3pm, to have lunch and perform Friday prayers. Questioning resumed at 3.10pm.

On Wednesday, Zahid was summoned to the headquarters for the second time and and yesterday for the third time. He was first summoned to MACC on July 3, over the case.

Also called by the graft busters on Wednesday, to have their statements recorded to facilitate their investigation into the case, were his daughter, Datuk Nurulhidayah Ahmad Zahid, and brother, Datuk Seri Mohamad Nasaee Ahmad Tarmizi.

According to previous reports, Zahid had been asked to explain claims that RM800,000 in Yayasan Akal Budi funds were used to pay credit card bills belonging to him and his wife.

Zahid is the chairman of the foundation, which was set up in 1977 with the aim of eradicating poverty.

He has denied any wrongdoing, saying his officer had mistakenly used the foundation’s money to pay the credit card bills.

Zahid said he had reimbursed the foundation in 2016.

On July 2, Zahid was first quizzed for about eight hours by MACC over his meeting with a member of the Saudi royal family in 2015.

The commission summoned Zahid to assist with its ongoing probe into the 1Malaysia Development Bhd.
