Mapim volunteers fly into warm reception

PALU: Volunteers of the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations (Mapim) flew into a warm reception when they arrived at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta on Sunday.

“Thank you Malaysia, may all be safe and remain in the best of health and tireless (in providing us assistance),” some Indonesians said to the team comprising 40 volunteers as they arrived at the Jakarta airport at 9.45pm.

Clad in green vests bearing the words “Humanitarian Mission” with the Jalur Gemilang and Mapim logo printed on it, the volunteers received endless thanks from several Indonesians at the airport.

This has helped boost the volunteers’ spirit in carrying Malaysia’s name through the second humanitarian aid mission to Palu, Central Sulawesi, which was hit by an earthquake and a tsunami on Sept 28.

The team then boarded a domestic Lion Air flight to get to the Mutiara SIS Al-Jufrie Airport here at 6.40am (local time) Monday.

Mapim will be distributing more than 10 trucks worth of essential items which include 3,000 packs of food, 2,000 hygiene packs, 2,000 packs of prayer items as well as milk, baby diapers and sanitary pads.

Thus far, the earthquake and tsunami that struck the island of Sulawesi have killed over 2,000 people and displaced more than 30,000. – Bernama
