Guan Eng: DAP not into chasing 'Datukships'

KUALA LUMPUR: The acceptance of titles is seen as an unhealthy culture that cannot be absorbed within the DAP.

The party's secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said appreciation should instead ceom from the people who are satisfied with the services provided by elected representatives.

Lim, who is also Finance Minister, stressed that this is DAP's stance and not pointed at any external parties.

"I hope this is not mistaken. I appreciate the support given by friends who stated they have taken the same stand, which is to reject the medals offered," Lim told reporters at the Parliament lobby, here, today.

"DAP does not want to become like Barisan Nasional that is often seen pursuing Datukship awards.

"I'm not a Datuk, but I have been DAP leader for so long. That is the message to be delivered," he added.

Lim reminded that in order to be a successful politician, they must first serve the people.

"We really appreciate the medals given but I think what is more important is the service to the people," he pointed out.

Previously, Lim had publicly criticised some DAP party leaders who received titles, stating that the actions of these leaders did not reflect the party's real struggle, and gave the wrong impression to the people.
