Penang landslide: Wife saw husband 'swallowed' by earth

GEORGE TOWN: For Norazizah who lost her husband in the Bukit Kukus landslide tragedy, she could still picture his final moments being 'swallowed' by tonnes of earth.

“There was nothing I could do to save my husband as I too was submerged in waist-deep earth.”

This was 24-year-old Norazizah’s account of what happened when landslide washed down their container homes at the Bukit Kukus paired road project site last Friday afternoon.

Norazizah’s husband, Subairi, 34, from Indonesia, is feared trapped inside the debris.

To date, six bodies have been discovered.

Norazizah said during the incident, Subairi was watching television in a kongsi house while she was inside the room.

She added that the incident happened within a flash and she heard a loud thud before seeing her husband trying to escape but to no avail.

“I heard a sound, like an explosion, coming from the hill, before the earth came crashing down and took my husband with it. I was also covered to my waist.

“However, rescuers brought me to safety and I was subsequently brought to the Penang Hospital,” she added.

She said, at that time, she did not know her husband’s fate.

Norazizah, who has a two-year-old girl with Subairi, is not working. She was here to see to her husband’s needs.

She has only been in the country for three months. They are from Buton Tengah, Sulawesi.

“I hope my husband can be found soon,” she added.

Norazizah and Wa Iri, 36, were among three people who made it to safety in the landslide.
