MACC summons Najib, might detain Irwan Serigar

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is likely to detain former Treasury secretary-general Tan Sri Dr Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah to assist in investigation into the dealings between 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and the International Petroleum Investment Co (IPIC).

Sources said MACC had already summoned former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Irwan to its headquarters in Putrajaya to facilitate investigation at 2pm tomorrow.

“Both of them have been informed on this matter and it is likely that MACC will detain Irwan before bringing him straight to court for the prosecution process the next day.

“However, Najib might be released after getting his statement recorded and he’ll be charged together with Irwan this Thursday,” the sources said.

The sources also said that Najib would face six charges related to IPIC but could not disclose the number of charges to be made against Irwan.

Previously, MACC detained Najib overnight at its headquarters before charging him on cases involving 1MDB and SRC International.

The New Straits Times reported today that Najib is expected to answer at least four more charges, this time on 1MDB’s dealings with IPIC.

Sources said MACC investigators had, in the course of its probe, looked into how the former administration had settled a debt using taxpayers’ money, and who authorised the payment — allegedly “without even the approval of the cabinet”.
