KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Razak maintains that he has done nothing for personal gain as six more charges pertaining to criminal breach of trust (CBT) looms over the former prime minister.
Speaking to reporters outside the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex, here, today, Najib stressed that allegations made against him were things done for the good of the country.
“I didn’t do anything for my personal benefit and what we did was for national interest, in dealings such as servicing loans.
“If we did not settle these it will be detrimental to the nation's economy and the people,” he added before leaving the court complex.
Najib and former Treasury secretary-general Tan Sri Dr Mohd Irwan Siregar Abdullah were jointly charged with six counts of CBT involving RM6.6 billion of government funds.
Meanwhile, Najib urged the public not to be confused by the shocking figure.
“All the charges are based on the implementation of projects and the servicing of loans. We have to pay after receiving money, so it should not be construed that such a sum went missing,” he added.
He further said that the payments were guided by national interests as defaulters face serious problems such as the decline in bond markets.
“We have certain contractual obligations that we have to follow in the interest of the nation,” he added.
Najib had earlier argued that the charges slapped against him were unreasonable and too general.
He further stressed that nowhere in the charge sheet had the prosecution indicated that he had gratified himself based on his decisions as a public servant.
Also present to accompany Najib at the court complex today was his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.
However, Rosmah declined to comment on the latest charges brought against her husband.
“I am fasting today and don’t want to add on to my sins,” Rosmah said.
