Beefing up enforcement against cigarette smuggling lauded

KOTA BARU: The decision by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government for the Customs Department to beef up enforcement on the smuggling of cigarettes has shown that what the Kelantan People’s Action Council has done all this while is right.

Its president Azmi Ali said the decision made at today’s Budget 2019 was also much welcomed.

“In tabling the 2019 Budget, the government said that the Customs Department will increase their enforcement against cigarette smuggling.

“As the non-governmental organisation that has been against this illegal activity for a long time, we found that the move is timely as it will help the government recover revenue,” he told NSTP.

Azmi said apart from that, the government’s decision that the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) look into and investigate “extraordinary wealth“ was also laudable.

“Besides that, the subsidy on petrol for both cars and motorcycles also showed that the government is concerned over the low-income group,” he said.

Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng today tabled Budget 2019 in Parliament, the first federal budget by the Pakatan Harapan government.

The Budget 2019 carries the theme “Credible Malaysia, Dynamic Economy, Prosperous Rakyat.”

It focuses on institutional reforms, the people’s wellbeing and promotion of entrepreneurial culture to recapture Malaysia’s “Economic Tiger” status.
