UTP ranked top 100 private universities in the world

SERI ISKANDAR: Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) earned spots on the global university rankings by becoming the youngest university to be recognised by the QS Top 50 Under 50 World University Ranking 2018.

Its vice chancellor Prof Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib said UTP rose to the ranks of between 71 and 80 for universities under 50 years old, making it the youngest university from Malaysia to receive the recognition.

“UTP’s performance also shines through in the QS World University Rankings 2018 as UTP rose 80 spots from the ranks of between 521 and 530 last year,” he said in his speech at 18th UTP convocation on Sunday.

Mohamed Ibrahim said UTP was also ranked 99 in the QS Asia University Ranking this year, making it the only private university in Malaysia to have made it to top 100.

“UTP was established 21 years and while it is not considered a long period, it was successful in making its mark with various achievements through continuous efforts as well as support from Petronas,” he said.

The graduation ceremony saw a total of 1,659 students completed bachelor’s degree (1,375), master’s degree (133) and doctorate (151).

At the event, former UTP board member Tan Sri Noordin Mohamad Hassan was conferred honorary doctorate (management) and UTP Academic Advisory Council member Prof Dr Klaus Ridle was conferred honorary doctorate in engineering.

Also present were UTP’s pro-chancellor Datuk Ahmad Nizam Salleh and Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin; and UTP board chairman Datuk Raiha Azni Abdul Rahman.
